A week after they were apprehended following a clash with the police, the nine Punjab University students detained have now filed a complaint with the UT Police Complaint Authority. They have accused the cops of resorting to a ‘lathi’ (cane) charge without following the legal procedure.

The students also alleged the Sector 11 police had implicated them in cases of rioting and molestation, among other charges. The students have named UT inspector general of police RP Upadhyaya, police superintendent Sukhchain Singh, deputy superintendent of police (central) Rajesh Kalia and the station head officer of Sector-11 police station Malkit Singh in the complaint.

The students have alleged Malkit ordered the police to cane the protesters who they said were demonstrating peacefully. The students have also claimed those wounded were not given medical attention in time.

The complaint has called for the police FIR filed against the students to be quashed and for action be taken against the police officers responsible for filing “false cases” against them.

On March 18, members of the Students of Punjab University were protesting against PU’s proposed fee hike when they were allegedly caned by the UT police.
