With the novel initiative of bridging the gap between artists and art lovers, Artscapes — a non-profit, non-government organisation that promotes art by providing artists of various mediums with a platform — organised the second All India Women Artists’ Contemporary Art Exhibition 2013 at Panjab University.

Simrat Sharma, director, Artscapes, says, “We started out by just promoting art, but then worked upon the dream of bridging the gap between the art, artist and the art lover. It was basically Suraj Mukhi Sharma’s (principal promoter) brainchild.”

The exhibition was inaugurated by Manish Tewari, minister of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, on Monday.

Amongst the awards given away by Artscapes, the first prize was bagged by Amruta Dharampal Shambharkar from Nagpur, who received R40,000 as prize money, for her work of art, Man and Machine 12. About her work, Amruta says, “I specialise in print making on zinc plates, while playing around with objective art, from which came out the 12-part series of Man and Machine. In my 12th piece of work, I have depicted man changing colours according to the mechanical world around him.”

Ivy Mandal from Kolkata, who won the third prize for her woodcut work, Phenomenon of Attraction, shares, “As an artist, I work on human relationships, but never include male and female figures directly in my work; it is the object that depicts the two.”

Ivy shared her third position with Mumbai-based Suchita Rai, who won for her ceramics called Global Warming. About her art piece, she says, “I have created the series, Global Warming, around symbols — such as a key hole depicting a man, who has got the key to destroy mother land, while the globe is burning like a furnace.”
