On who approached her family for striking the alliance, she said it was one of her shopkeeper husband’s three brothers, who was posted in the Central Reserve Police Force in Assam.

She said he saw her and after holding talks with her family members called his brother to take her along. Whether she has mixed well with the Haryanavi culture? Meena said she held no grudge against anyone as her children study in English medium schools and they were fed well and taken care of properly by family members here.

Despite living a stone’s throw from house of Meera Deka, who hails from Meena’s native place, the latter who lives with her husband, three children and mother-in-law in a one-room set, rarely get the opportunity to meet up with the former and share their concerns.

“Even 24 hours are less to finish the amount of work women here have to do so I rarely get the opportunity to speak, as none from our family likes us to wander aimlessly sans work,” said Meena.

Meena’s elderly mother-inlaw said they gave a new identity to her and today she is adept at chopping feed for animals, milking buffaloes, churning milk, respecting elders and above all she is also fair complexioned unlike brides from southern states.

The father I strive to be

I must confess I had a superficial role in bringing up my children and, in the same breath, I am proud to have discharged my primary duty of being a provider as a pro-active, concerned, and responsible caretaker. Writes Col Avnish Sharma (retd).
