Auto-lifters’ gang busted; 25 stolen vehicles recovered

The local police claim to have busted a gang of auto-lifters with the arrest of three persons.

Police have recovered five Honda Activa scooters, two motorcycles and 16 bicycles from their possession, said Rajesh Shukla, station house officer (SHO), Sector-34 police station, adding that 27 cases of theft had been solved with the arrests.

The accused have been identified as Om Parkash alias Bokla of Sector 32; Saurav Singh alias Sai of Garhwal; and Amandeep Singh alias Billy of Rupnagar.

Om Parkash was arrested from Sector 44 on Tuesday and a stolen Honda Activa scooter was recovered from his possesion. Later in the day, another police party intercepted Saurav and Amandeep in Sector 33 and recovered another stolen vehicle from their possession.

The SHO claimed that during investigation, the trio confessed that they used to sell the stolen vehicles to oblivious persons at much lesser rates.

He said the accused were drug addicts and took to crime to meet their need for drugs, adding that more recoveries were expected.

Nabard sanctions Rs 45 crore for Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) has sanctioned a loan of about Rs 45 crore under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) to the Punjab government for undertaking various civil works in 1,999 primary schools spread across 22 districts in the state under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).
