Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Thursday welcomed the Centre’s move to allow states to directly market their own products and services to other countries and hence become ambassadors of their products.

The move marks the meeting of a long-standing demand raised by Badal at various fora to decentralise export process, a state government spokesperson said.

“An era of new trade regime will begin with this decision,” Badal said, urging the Centre to expedite the process so that the states benefited from it.

The Centre has asked Indian embassies across the world to provide space to states to show their trade and commerce potential and facilitate exports. The biggest beneficiary of the proposal could be the Punjab farmers whose produce and its value-added products would find new markets all across the world.
