In a significant development relating to the recent suicide of a Punjab National Bank (PNB) manager, Haryana DGP SN Vashisht transferred the case to AmbalaPanchkula police commissioner Ajay Singhal. The police have also set up a special investigation team headed by Kalka ACP Purnima Singh to fast track investigations into the case.
“The SIT members will be appointed by Tuesday,” Singh said.
Alleging he had been humiliated by senior bank officials, Ajay Sehgal, the chief manager of the bank’s branch in Sector 20, Panchkula, killed himself by jumping in front of an oncoming train on the Chandigarh-Ambala tracks near Vikas Nagar last Wednesday. The suicide note he left behind, in which he named the bank’s field general manager, JK Gupta, and Chandigarh circle head, AK Gupta, for taking the extreme step, sent shockwaves through the banking fraternity.
Both were later booked under Section 306 (abetment to suicide).
Sources said the case had been transferred on the recommendation of the Government Railway Police (GRP), which is investigating the case as the suicide scene falls in its jurisdiction.
However, questions have been raised over the manner in which the GRP kept sitting over the matter and within this period, JK Gupta and AK Gupta were transferred.
When questioned, Railways SP Ashok Kumar said after he carefully studied the case, in which senior PNB officials were involved, he had recommended it should be transferred to speed up investigations.
“The file relating to the case would be handed over the SIT on Tuesday,” he added.
“The very reason we have set up an SIT is because we want the investigations to move faster. The case was handed over to the Panchkula-Ambala police chief as all records relating to the case are in Panchkula,” he added.
Meanwhile, a higher official from PNB, Delhi visited local office on the fact finding mission in this case.
The general manager, posted in the HRD department in Delhi head office, Sushma Bali met several local officials who were part of the meeting in which Sehgal was severely pulled up by JK Gupta following which he committed suicide.
NEW GM, CIRCLE HEAD TAKE CHARGE
BM Padha, who replaced JK Gupta as Punjab National Bank’s field general manager, took charge of his office on Monday while SK Dua, who replaced AK Gupta as the bank’s Chandigarh circle head, also joined the local office.
