Bansal, in a letter to defence minister AK Antony, has requested that watch hours - operation hours - at the airport be extended to 11 pm and airport be upgraded with an instrument landing system.

The MP said that that the upgraded civil terminal at Chandigarh airport was set up three years ago and facilities had been provided for introduction of international flights. "Chandigarh, being the capital of Punjab and Haryana, and a gateway to Himachal Pradesh, needs international air connectivity," the Congress MP said.

He also said the city was a hub of banking, educational and medical care. He said that the introduction of international flights would reduce the rush from these states at India Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi. "Despite all clearances what we now require is a nod from the ministry of defence for extension of watch hours. This will not pose any security threat and will help the people of Chandigarh and region," the MP said, adding that instrument landing system would avoid flight disruptions caused by foggy conditions.
