The BJP on Thursday accused Haryana Janhit Congress chief Kuldeep Bishnoi of acting as the B-team of chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and announced that it will fight the Haryana assembly elections on its own.

BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain mocked Bishnoi’s “delusion” of becoming Haryana’s chief minister and derided him as “a general without an army”. People of Haryana, he said, had decided to elect a BJP government.

“The BJP will fight the elections on its own... and will form the government after getting the people’s mandate,” he said at a press conference soon after Bishnoi’s announcement of severing ties with the BJP.

In this year’s Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had contested on eight seats in Haryana, while the HJC fought the remaining two seats. The BJP had won seven seats, but the HJC drew a blank.

It had been a shaky alliance since then as the BJP wanted to give fewer seats to the HJC in the upcoming assembly polls than what was decided earlier.

“We wanted him (Bishnoi) to understand the ground realities. Any understanding is rooted in the facts on the ground. He had six MLAs and all of them, except him, joined the Congress. We have never betrayed any ally,” Hussain said.

Hussain said relations between the two parties had soured during the Lok Sabha polls itself when the BJP rejected Bishnoi’s proposal to field Venod Sharma, a former close aide of Hooda who had left the Congress.

The BJP also turned down the proposal to make Bishnoi’s controversial elder brother Chandra Mohan alias Chand Mohammad as an alliance candidate.

“He (Bishnoi) did not even have candidates for two Lok Sabha seats. Where would he get people to fight the assembly polls? And he has a delusion of becoming the chief minister,” the BJP spokesperson said.
