The Congress on Saturday accused the ruling SAD-BJP government of "clandestinely" issuing the notification for block samiti and zila parishad elections, leaving little time for candidates to prepare nominations. The issuance of the notification came late Thursday evening, preceded three holidays, and the filing of papers begins on April 26.
However, the last date for filing nominations is April 29, while voting will be held on May 12. The counting and result date is May 14.
The Congress said the authorities were yet to display the proposed zones of block samitis and zila parishads. Neither were the electoral rolls, nor the reservation roster notified, said a spokesman of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) here: "How will a candidate prepare the nomination if he is not aware of the nature of zones or category of its reservation?"
The party spokesperson dubbed as undemocratic, arbitrary and unlawful the manner in which the government issued the notification and said that the entire modus operandi of the government was aimed at illegitimately capturing these institutions.
He noted that the state government had failed to give the Rs. 3 lakh reward announced five years ago for gram panchayats elected unanimously.
