Brahmpura to head SAD parliamentary party

Veteran Akali leader Ranjit Singh Brahmpura was on Tuesday elected the leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) parliamentary party in the Lok Sabha.


Earlier, party president Sukhbir Singh Badal had named him as the party's nominee for the post.Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal has hailed Brahmpura's elevation to this position at the national level, according to a press statement.

A long-time political confidant and a known loyalist of the Akali supremo, Brahmpura is regarded as "a pillar of traditional Akali values". The 77-year-old was elected from Khadoor Sahib parliamentary seat. He was first elected to the Punjab Vidhan Sabha in 1977 and also remained a cabinet minister from 2002 to 2007.
