Commerce and industry minister Anand Sharma on Saturday said he would place the Amritsar-Delhi-Kolkata industrial corridor project before the cabinet for its approval.

"I hope to take the (cabinet's) approval by January, first week," Sharma said at the inauguration of the 86th annual general meeting of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) here. The Japanese government would be a strong partner in making the structural and financing arrangements to operationalise the project, he said.

The project patterned on the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) would use the dedicated Eastern Freight Train Corridor as backbone, said the minister, adding that it would cover Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal, and give a major push to industrialisation and job creation in the region.

The Bengaluru-Mumbai Economic Corridor (BMEC) project was on course, said Sharma, adding that the United Kingdom had shown interest in it. Recently, international bids for request for qualification (RfQ)-cum-request for proposal (RfP) were called for selecting a consultant to prepare a prospective plan for the project.

Sharma said these infrastructure projects would give the much-needed boost to the manufacturing sector and raise its gross domestic product (GDP) contribution from the current 16% to 25% by 2025 for the gainful employment of future workforce.
