Cricket fans who thronged the PCA stadium here to witness India-England 4th one-day international on Wednesday were in for a surprise as security personnel directed them to call up a particular number from their mobile phones before they were allowed inside.

Police officials claimed that the spectators were asked to dial different numbers at different entry points merely to ensure that the devices carried inside the stadium were actually mobile phones and not some electrical or electronic devices that could be used as remote to pose security threat.

"During the security check, police personnel asked me to dial a particular number; looking at my hesitation, the policemen on duty said it was just for security reasons. Otherwise, they warned, the phone would have to be deposited. So I called up the number given to me and only then was I allowed to carry the phone inside the stadium," said a spectator Rupali Kaushik.

"I was surprised when asked to dial the number from my mobile phone. I dialed the number since policemen insisted that otherwise I will not be allowed inside the stadium," said Nikhil Rana.

"No one was allowed to enter the stadium without following this ritual of making the call. We just made the call and disconnected soon after," said another spectator Srishti Sharma.
