This PU student council elections, it is not the freebies that is the issue. That is taken as a given, but the kind of freebies on offer are emerging as the differentiating factor and is being used as the main instrument to woo voters. Voters are the king and are deciding on the kind of freebies they want and are making sure that they are valued.

Consider this. On Tuesday, three buses kept waiting outside Punjab University’s Gate No 3 for over two hours to take students from the chemical engineering department to first the Thunder Zone and then to the Elante mall, where an auditorium was booked for a free movie show for students.

The students at the University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology (UICET) had gathered at one of the canteens in the morning where they were pursued by a student body to go for the trip.

However, it was after much persuasion that the students agreed, only for the movie. It was rumoured that the trip was organised by Student Organisation of India (SOI), but the party denied the same.

Police act as spoilsport

However, once students started assembling around Gate No 3 where the buses were parked they were stopped by UT cops. It was only sometime later that the students could escape police watch and boarded the buses. Again, no student body officially claimed credit.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, one of the drivers, said, “We have been  here  since 9am and told that we shall be leaving by 9:30 am, but it has been over two hours no one has come to board the bus.”

main targets for wooing

Students from University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) and those from University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) are among the main targets for such freebies. A senior NSUI leader confirmed to HT that they too had arranged a trip for Kasauli on Tuesday early morning.

UIET freshers’ soiree at same time as rally

Two student parties have arranged a freshers’ party for students of University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) on Tuesday at the same time as the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has arranged its rally.
Some students complain that with the entire focus of parties on them, the PU needs to be sensitive to their concerns.

The top four woo factors

Free trips, parties (with alcohol), lunch/dinner and free movies are in demand in this order with the students at the varsity.

Ensuring good governance

What is good governance? Who all are responsible for it? Why must we have good governance? What sabotages it? Can we ensure good governance? What happens when governance fails? Who fails it? Is there a way to check it? If so, what is it?
