Social media was abuzz with reactions to Narendra Modi-led BJP’s victory, and the celebrity candidates from the region got special attention. Of the candidates themselves, till the evening only AAP’s Chandigarh candidate Gul Panag, who lost to fellow actor Kirron Kher (BJP) tweeted: “My heartiest congratulations to @KirronKherBJP, @PawanBansalMP and all the other candidates.”
Kirron herself did not tweet as such, but husband Anupam Kher (@AnupamPkher) did: “Good Luck to @KirronKherBJP. May she win & dedicate her life for the people of our country, May God & people of Chandigarh be on her side.:)”
Kirron’s pictures from the party office celebrations were getting re-tweeted and shared by her fans. The loser here was Congress incumbent Pawan Kumar Bansal.
In neighbouring Punjab, comic Bhagwant Mann on the AAP ticket won Sangrur. On Facebook, the ‘I love Chandigarh’ page posted celebration pictures of Bhagwant Mann, too, besides those of Kirron.
There were some Twitter posts wondering how good Kirron could be for Chandigarh, which had a “young, spunky woman option too”.
Jassi Jasraj couldn’t make it from Bathinda on the AAP ticket, and his absence was felt on social media too. But veteran actor Vinod Khanna, who won from Gurdaspur, was also the subject of some talk.
People went berserk in Twitter reactions: some funny, some sarcastic, some happy accepting the verdict and hoping for a better future.
@ek_insaan: “@GulPanag Appreciate the grace! The grace of aam aurat! @KirronKherBJP Ab shreshth chandigarh aap banaiye. @PawanBansalMP aap araam kijiye.”
@sardanarohit: “Arvind Kejriwal may plan shifting base to Punjab now; though Chandigarh won’t be the HQ as Gul Panag lost!”
@nayansakhuja: “Playing an over-dramatic Punjabi mom in films has paid off for Kirron Kher as she wins in #Chandigarh.”
@DarkPsy: “The highlight of this election is that Bhagwant Mann won for AAP! The hilarious punjabi comedy he’s done has always been abt social issues.”
@seerat_singh: Congrats @VinodKhanna on winning in Gurdaspur. Please don’t go MIA from the constituency for the next 5 years. Like you did before :)
