Irked by the dilly-dallying approach of officials of the Pinjore-Swarghat national highway and the public works department (PWD) in completing construction and repair work on bridges and roads in a time-bound manner, BJP MLA from Nalagarh KL Thakur has urged the central government to take up the matter “in the larger interest of the area residents”.

In a letter written to the surface transport minister, Thakur said: “In order to cover up the delay the authorities concerned have undertaken construction and repair work without following a uniform pattern with respect to the road's width, in the process compromising on the quality of work.

Instead of dragging their feet , they should complete construction of the Chikani Khad and Maha Nadi Khad bridges immediately besides the work on widening a large number of bridge culverts.  The work doesn't meet the basic requirements of road construction as per national highway standards. The work is being done in a piecemeal manner unlike the high standard of work on national highways built in the adjoining states of Haryana and Punjab”.

Thakur said the construction and repair work should be divided into a minimum of ten sectors with sufficient machinery and manpower in each sector.

“This will ensure construction and repair work is carried in a uniform pattern and in a time bound manner. At the same time, the quality of work as per national highway standards, like sprinkling water regularly on the road surface, will be maintained. A detailed project report of old existing bridges and culverts en route should also be prepared at the earliest, and two slab culverts in Mahadev and Jhiriwala villages should be completed immediately,” he added.

Thakur said though the authorities  concerned  had stated the road between Nalagarh to Swarghat  would be completed by March 2015, the slow pace of construction and repair work was indicative of the project being delayed on one or the other pretext. He said a delegation of the elected representatives of the panchayati raj institutions and farmers had met the Nalagarh subdivisional magistrate to ensure projects were completed in a time bound manner.

“The delegation had conveyed to the magistrate that if this was not done, residents of the area would launch an agitation by blocking traffic on the highway”, Thakur added.
