Senior Akali Dal leader and former MLA Didar Singh Bhatti was appointed as the halqa in charge of Fatehgarh Sahib, on Friday, replacing Anandpur Sahib member of Parliament (MP) Prem Singh Chandumajra.
The friction between Bhatti and Chandumajra came to fore in the constituency when the SAD denied Bhatti a ticket in the 2012 assembly election and fielded Prem Singh Chandumajra as an MLA candidate from Fatehgarh Sahib.

After Chandumajra lost the assembly poll to Congress MLA Kuljit Singh Nagra, he was appointed as the halqa in charge.
It may be mentioned here that Bhatti had defected from the SAD to the People's Party of Punjab (PPP) when he was denied a ticket in 2012.

He contested the election against the then SAD candidate Prem Singh Chandumajra. However, Bhatti was re-absorbed into the SAD fold by deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal in August 2012, after the assembly polls.

Talking to HT, former Sirhind MLA Didar Singh Bhatti confirmed the development and said party president Sukhbir Singh Badal had made him halqa in charge in Chandigarh.

Akali Dal district president Jagdeep Singh Cheema also confirmed the development.

Ajay Libra, a staunch supporter of Bhatti, welcomed the decision and added that newly-appointed halqa in charge "had a large base in area politics and would be able to understand the problems of the constituency better than any other leader".

Student Centre cries for attention

The Panjab University (PU) Student Centre, which is the heart of the social activities of students, is crying for attention due to poor maintenance. Broken gazeboes, foul smell emanating from the stagnant water from the non-functional fountain and leftovers of food littered all around: the centre has been in a terrible state for so long.
