Punjab chief secretary Rakesh Singh and principal secretary (irrigation) Sarvesh Kaushal, along with a team of senior engineers and the district administration, inspected ongoing works of the irrigation department at Rupnagar and Shahpur Kandi (Pathankot) on Thursday.

According to a government spokesperson, an intensive inspection and review of the construction of the barrage, hydel channel and other components was carried out at Shahpur Kandi. The total project cost is around Rs. 2,200 crore, including irrigation and power components. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2016. The main dam's cost is Rs. 687 crore.

The construction of the Rs. 90-crore 6.8-km-long hydel channel is also in full swing and is likely to be completed by the end of 2015, the spokesperson added.

Design components of the project have been completed and the construction of the first eight bays out of 22 has already started after diverting the river water. The concreting of the head regulator of the water channel is also in progress.

Regarding de-silting of the choked Ropar headworks with the objective of maintaining vital irrigation regulatory infrastructure, the irrigation department has already excavated about 25,000 truckloads of silt and created a huge dump on irrigation land on the Morinda road.

The chief secretary and the principal secretary (irrigation) visited the de-silting site as well as the dumping yard during the inspections.
