After union finance minister Arun Jaitley proposed an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) for Punjab in his budget proposals on Thursday, chief minister Parkash Singh Badal announced that the IIM for the state would be set up in Amritsar.

In a statement here, Badal also thanked Jaitley for including Amritsar under the National Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (Hriday) to develop it as a world-class tourist destination, besides the completion of the Kolkata-Amritsar industrial corridor.

“The budget announcements speak volumes of Jaitley’s love and affection for the people of Punjab in general and Amritsar in particular,” Badal said.

Punjab revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia on Thursday hailed Arun Jaitley “for giving Amritsar the respect it deserves as a holy city by including it in the Hriday heritage scheme as well as taking concrete steps to make the national industrial corridor a reality by announcing that the Kolkata-Amritsar industrial master planning would be completed expeditiously.”

“Never before has such twin largesse been bestowed on Amritsar,” said Majithia. Earlier in the day, Majithia had demanded that the IIM proposed for Punjab be set up in Amritsar.
