Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal will lay the foundation stone of the Jang-e-Azadi memorial at Kartarpur in Jalandhar district on October 12. This decision was taken at a meeting of the Jang-e-Azadi memorial foundation on Monday.

It was also decided that the stone-laying ceremony would be organised as a mega event, expected to be attended by at least 50,000 persons.

Badal asked the executive committee to invite family members of freedom fighters and other patriots associated with various movements of the nation’s freedom struggle. The memorial would come up over an area of 25 acres at a cost of Rs. 200 crore to showcase the legacy and contribution of Punjabis to the Indian freedom struggle.

The CM also approved the design layout of the memorial, conceptualised and designed by top architect Raj Rewal.

Rewal explained the proposed galleries to be constructed to highlight various movements of the freedom struggle. It would have an exhibition gallery, Shahid-e-Minar, auditorium, movie hall, open-air theatre, amphitheatre, library, research and seminar halls. The CM asked Rewal to ensure its completion within 18 months.

Earlier, member secretary of the foundation and managing editor of the Ajit Group of Newspapers Barjinder Singh Hamdard apprised the CM of the film being directed by Shyam Benegal and the allocation of work to one of the five shortlisted expert companies for the laser show.
