Hitting out at Akali MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal for her remarks against Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Nimisha Mehta said the comments "reflected the diminutive mentality of the Badal bahu, who was capable of nothing but giving venomous speeches full of hatred."

"People had expected Harsimrat to usher in development for the state and its residents. But it seems that development is not even on her mind as she only wants to talk of unfortunate events of 1984. By regularly giving hate speeches and recalling the bloodshed of the dark days, Harsimrat is doing nothing but merely rubbing salt (into) and re-opening wounds of those who were affected directly or indirectly by the carnage," Mehta added.

"Such statements, aimed at instigating communal disturbance, are bound to hamper peace and harmony of the state. People from every strata and walk of life had cast their votes in her (Harsimrat's) favour, but the Badal bahu has never spoken in favour of any other community. Nearly 25,000 innocent people, including a large chunk of Hindus, were killed during terrorism. Why has she never spoken about them or expressed solidarity?" the spokesperson asked.
