Congress workers led by Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) vice-president, Rana KP Singh, staged a dharna outside the municipal council office to protest against imposition of property tax here on Thursday.

Addressing the dharna, Singh criticised the government for burdening people by imposing hefty property tax in the state.

He compared it to 'zazia tax' imposed by Aurangzeb and said Congress would withdraw the tax after coming into power in the state. Accusing the government of making people tenants in their own houses, Rana also criticised the Nangal municipal council for increasing water and sewerage tariffs.

"Nangal municipal council had an annual budget of `75 crore and was one of the richest municipal councils of the state, but it was charging `180 for water supply and `140 for sewerage facility from the people of the town, which was higher than other municipal councils of the state," he said, alleging that the local member of legislative assembly (MLA) and Punjab industries Minister Madan Mohan Mittal had forcibly included villages such as Kathera, Barari, Jawahar Market, Maida Majra and Ramopur Sahni in the municipal limit of Nangal against the residents' wishes.

"At a time when the residents of these villages, who were displaced due to the National Fertiliser Limited Factory, were yet to get the ownership rights of the land given to them, they were further burned with the tax," he added.

Congress leaders Ashok Kumar Swamipur, Ramesh Dasgrain, Ajit Singh, Ashok Saini, Sanjiv Gautam, Jagirdar Ram Pal, Deepak Nanda and Veena Airy also spoke on the occasion.
