The district police are groping in dark even five days after Congress leader Rajwant Singh Shergill's body was found in his car here.

Though, police believe that love angle was the reason behind the killing, they have not been able to gather any clues about the person who committed the crime. It was a cleverly planned murder, the police claimed.

It has also come to light that the deceased was allowed gunners on demand, but he did not ask for them on the day he left for Delhi.

Acting on directions of Punjab and Haryana high court, ADGP, law and order, Punjab, allowed security to the leader on demand.

Superintendent of police (SP) Gursharandeep Singh Grewal said, "We have not been able to reach any conclusion till date, but are working on various theories. The investigation so far brings us to the fact that an illicit relation was the reason behind the murder."

Another senior police officer said, "On May 18, when the deceased left for Delhi, he did not take any gunner with him. He also did not take any baggage with him and told his wife that he would be back the next day."

On Saturday, district police found that the car from which the body of Shergill was recovered had crossed the Chandimandir toll plaza at 8.15am on May 18, and came back after crossing the same toll after an hour. Police is yet to identify the person sitting in the car because of unclear CCTV footage.

Shergill's decomposed body was found in his car at Sector 69 in SAS Nagar on May 21.
