Former Congress member of Parliament (MP) from Faridkot Jagmeet Singh Brar approached the Punjab and Haryana high court on Monday, seeking a probe from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the recently unearthed multi-crore international drug racket after the arrest of dismissed Punjab deputy superintendent of police (DSP) and Arjuna Awardee wrestler Jagdish Singh alias Bhola.

Considering Brar's contentions in the public interest litigation that Punjab police's preliminary inquiry into the case had revealed that the racket could be of more than Rs. 700 crore, the vacation bench headed by justice Paramjeet Singh issued notices of motion to the Punjab government, state director general of police as well as the CBI for filing their replies before January 10.

The Punjab police had arrested Bhola, kingpin of an international synthetic drug racket, on November 11, 2013, along with his four associates from a dhaba at Ghanaur on the GT road near New Delhi and the recovery of synthetic drugs worth Rs. 18 crore was made. After his arrest, Bhola had alleged that three Punjab ministers were involved in the drug racket.

Arguing the case himself, Brar, a law graduate, contended that after Bhola's arrest, he had stated that politicians of high repute and some higher officials of the Punjab government were involved in the racket and he would reveal their names in case the probe was handed over to any central agency.

The former MP further submitted that since chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had declined to hand over the investigation to the CBI without assigning any reasons, it was a fit case to be probed by the premier investigation agency.

After going through news reports in the media, prima facie it appears that the chief minister has some apprehension that Bhola could reveal names of politicians close to the government, Brar added. He alleged that since politicians and higher officials were involved in the case, therefore, a fair investigation by a central agency was necessary as an impartial probe by any state agency was not possible.

Brar submitted that the state police were hurriedly completing the investigation so that higher-ups involved in the racket could be saved. The drug menace has ruined the lives of thousands of young people in Punjab by pushing them into dark lanes of drugs and crime by those people whose greed for money has crossed the limits and they could go to any extent for their motive, he submitted.
