Reacting on the ultimatum issued by Rajya Sabha MP Birender Singh that he would not contest poll under the Congress banner, if Bhupinder Singh Hooda was not replaced as chief ministerial candidate, former cabinet minister Sampat Singh on Wednesday said “if a senior leader like him (Birender Singh) calling it quits, then Congress would surely be weakened”.

The Nalwa MLA, Sampat, said this while interacting with reporters in Delhi on Wednesday, where he held a meeting with Haryana Congress incharge Shakeel Ahmad and Congress Haryana chief Ashok Tanwar.

Talking to Hindustan Times over phone, he said: “Even if a blocklevel worker quits, the party will surely suffer, whereas Birender has a big stature in the party and that is why he has been sent to the Rajya Sabha despite having many other senior party leaders in queue.”

Commenting on the demand of prominent Jat leader from Banger area that Birender to replace Hooda as the chief ministerial candidate, he said the issue had already been resolved after Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi conveyed his message after deliberations and thus raking it up again does not hold logic.

“Birender should understand that the kind of respect he commands in Congress, he will get nowhere else (BJP) and his calling it quits won’t finish of the grand old party despite his big stature and importance,” he said.

On Congress drubbing in the Lok Sabha elections, he said the party had to face debacle as it delayed the decision to name the Haryana Cong ress president.

“At present, Tanwar is looking after the party affairs in a professional manner, so the party will repeat its 2004 and 2009 success in the state,” he added.
