Construction agencies told to utilise fly ash from thermal plants

The Punjab government has issued strict instructions to all agencies involved in construction of buildings and highways to ensure 100% utilisation of fly ash in accordance with the notification issued by the science and technology department.

According to an official spokesman, as per stipulations, all coal-, lignite-based thermal power stations or expansion units in operation in the state on the date of the notification would achieve 100% fly-ash utilisation within five years of the notification.

Similarly, new coal- and lignite-based thermal plants commissioned after November 3, 2009 are required to ensure 100% utilisation of fly ash within four years of setting up of the plant.

The spokesman said it had been observed that agencies involved in the construction of buildings and highways were not utilising fly ash as per stipulations.

To ensure the strict compliance of these instructions, the Punjab government has constituted a state-level committee for the constructive and purposeful use of fly ash emitting from various ther mal plants of the state.

The secretary, science technology and environment department, is chairman of the committee, comprising secretary power, director industries de par tment ( mining), chief engineer (headquarters), public works department (B&R), and member secretary, Punjab Pollution Control Board, as members, while the chief engineer (thermal design) of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited will be the convener of the committee.
