Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Wednesday warned the state police that cops found colluding with drug peddlers or smugglers would straightaway lose their jobs.

The deputy CM conveyed this at a high-level meeting with commissioners of police and senior superintendent of police (SSPs) from all districts held here to review the state's law and order situation, a spokesman said.

The suggestion to weed out cops found guilty of being hand in glove with those dealing in drugs was mooted by director general of police (DGP) Sumedh Singh Saini during the meeting, the spokesman said.

Sukhbir issued a direction to all SSPs and commissioners to launch a concerted drive against drug peddlers and come out with concrete results within a month. He directed police officers to strike at the root of the drug trade and not be content with just arresting peddlers. "You must investigate the forward and backward linkages," he said, adding there must be zero tolerance towards drugs.

He observed that though there was a quantum increase in the recovery of narcotics, this should not make the force complacent as peddlers were still trying to induce youth in the state to take to drugs.

He asked the SSPs to conduct a microanalysis in their districts to check the flow, sale and resale of drugs.

He said besides intelligence and other sources, he was regularly getting feedback from other channels as well regarding the menace of drug addiction in the state.
