Seeking quick and exemplary punishment for heinous crimes against women, Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Saturday gave a clarion call to fast track the judicial process.

Civil society had played a big role in fast justice for the Delhi gang-rape victim, but still there remained a need to instill the fear of law among the perpetrators of similar crimes, the member of the Lok Sabha stressed in a press statement issued here.

"This will happen, if there is zero tolerance on this front and civil society is assured that all such crimes against women will be handled not only sensitively but also firmly, and that equally stringent punishment will be handed out to the perpetrators," reads the statement.

Justice had been delivered in the 16/12 case but near 1.7-lakh cases of crimes against women remained pending in the country, said the MP, adding: "The sentence happened because of public pressure but more women are waiting for justice."

As far as the Punjab government was concerned, said Harsimrat Kaur, chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had in February last year proposed to raise 20 fast-track courts to deal with the cases of sexual assault on women. The state cabinet had approved the proposal, she said, adding that go-ahead had come for creating 20 additional posts in superior judicial services and support staff.
