Cyclist crushed by CTU bus near Matka Chowk

A 21-year-old cyclist was crushed to death and the pillion rider was injured after being hit by a Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) bus on the road near Matka Chowk here around 3 pm on Wednesday evening. The cyclist was pedalling on the main road even though there is cycle track along the road.

The deceased has been identified as Subhash Yadav and the injured as Rohit Yadav. Both hail from Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh. Shubhash had recently completed his graduation and had come to the city looking for a job. After the bus hit the cycle, Subhash fell on the road and his head was crushed under the left wheel of the bus. There was traffic jam for about half an hour after the accident. The certificates of the victim Subhash could be seen scattered on the road.

The victims were rushed to the Sector-16 Government Multi Specialty Hospital (GMSH), where Shubhash was declared brought dead. Meanwhile, Rohit was referred to the PGIMER, where his condition is said to be critical. The accused bus driver Nirmal Singh, a resident of Hallomajra, was arrested from the spot and booked for causing death due to negligence under Section 304 A of the IPC.

Military personnel on casual leave have to be treated on duty: SC

The Supreme Court has ruled that military personnel suffering disabilities while on casual leave would be treated to be on duty and entitled to disability pension. The Supreme Court, while interpreting relevant rules and regulations, has held that casual leave is treated as duty and hence the individual is to be treated as being on duty at the time of the accident.
