Day after action by transport officer, school-bus operators observe strike

A day after the district transport officer here fined 17 school buses for various violations, school-bus operators on Tuesday observed a strike to protest the action.

The bus operators of Holy Family School, Khalsa Senior Secondary School, DAV Public School, Shiwalik Public School, Sutlej Public School, Guru Ram Rai Public School and St Carmel School participated in the strike.

Punjab School Students' Transport-Provider Association's local president, Karamjit Singh, condemned the action by the district transport officer, who had issued challans to 17 school buses on Monday.

A delegation of the association met deputy commissioner Pardeep Kumar Aggarwal and submitted a memorandum to him. In the memorandum, they also demanded tax exemption for school buses on the pattern of Haryana and Chandigarh.

The DC assured that he would be look into their demands .He has called a meeting of bus operators and school principals on July 26 to discuss the issue.
