A day after 17-year-old girl was crushed to death under the rear wheel of a Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) bus, city-based advocate Ajay Jagga submitted a representation to UT adviser KK Sharma for framing the rules, as provided under the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act, 2007, making the speed governor mandatory for buses.

Jagga in his representation stated that many lives could be saved by implementing the laws, that was, by framing the appropriate rules in this regard. “The number of deaths due to accident with buses, especially CTU buses and trucks are increasing, causing irreparable loss to society and unfortunately it is continuing, despite being avoidable,” he added.

He further said the states/UTs had been empowered to make rules with regard to speed governors in the transport vehicles and it was the duty of the state and UT governments to frame the suitable rules for implementing the amendment and for the safety of people especially the schoolchildren, women, and senior citizens.

He requested that all local CTU buses and other buses and trucks plying in city should be fitted with speed governors, as the maximum speed for these vehicles was 55 kilometres per hour.
