So many people hate the cold December. I, too, would feel so once, but not now. Now, I welcome this month as I once did my bride more than four decades ago! I learnt a lot from her, and also from December. I wonder why people hate this month, which makes us eagerly await the New Year.
Delving deep, I wondered how we could feel that summer is good unless we tasted the prick of a cold December chill. We even curse the scorching heat of June, and crave to have December again! Shakespeare's advice on romantic love, "Men are April when they woo/ But December when they wed", gives a wonderful lesson. It refers to the warmth of April and the cold of December. But it also cautions one to beware of the December moods before taking the plunge.
Earlier, in December, I would witness how people living in damp and misty places suffer from mood swings, irritability, lack of zest to work, and have an intense desire to remain in bed for more hours. I found how creative people were the worst hit. Emily Dickinson would write a lot during summers but lose interest in writing during winters.
I discovered that an intense seasonal change in December would make numerous people its victims. I also found that whenever the sunlight would intensify during the day, I would find it comfortable to read and write rather effectively. But as the day would cool down, I would lose the zest and stamina to write.
PB Shelley's words "If winter comes, can spring be far behind?" are like pearls of a rosary. They help me cope with the sad moments in life with a hopeful expectancy. "He who never forgets those from whom he learns something is always blessed by God," were my father's last words, wise but painful like chilling December.
True, God helps those who help themselves. One day, I dared to remove the curtains from my windowpanes, even removing the lids of some ventilators of my room. The sunlight flooded my dark, chilly room. In a matter of seconds, my mood lifted. Even forgetting to take a cup of coffee, I lifted my pen, and wrote on the pleasures of December. I started preferring juice to coffee, even enjoying deep breathing in the sunlight. Day by day, I discovered the thrills one can have even in December.
It's neither the month nor the weather that's bad. It's our own attitude and lifestyle that feeds our moods and whims. Now I am always cheerful and gay even when the cold winds blow. Yoga, jogging, walking and a balanced diet take care of each month and weather that knocks at my doorstep.
