The high court on Monday gave the Punjab government 10 days to decided whether or not to restore security cover to Patti-based Congress leader Harminder Singh Gill, who has alleged withdrawal of security in December last year as he remains a political threat to Akali minister Adesh Partap Singh Kairon.

Gill's counsel Gurvinder Singh said the Punjab government had misused its power to remove the security personnel. In the petition, Gill has mentioned that Patti falls in Tarn Taran district that borders Pakistan and is known to be a region where miscreants and drug peddlers are roaming scot-free, and hence there is a danger to the his life as he is "an extremely popular social leader".

He also cited some past incidents where leaders were gunned down in the same district allegedly owing to political vendetta.

Roads become victims of Encroachment

Despite all its trappings of discipline, Chandigarh is a victim of encroachments. The sprawling roads are often reduced to gullies as encroachers — fruit sellers to motor mechanics to people who park where they please — are present across the city.
