At least 78 families from across Punjab on Thursday furnished details of their relatives stuck in Iraq to the state government. The helplines are 0172-2740397, 2740035 and fax 0172-2740936.

By 7pm, details were received from 10 families of Gurdaspur, four of Nawanshahr, 21 from Jalandhar, six each from Patiala and Hoshiarpur, 10 from Kapurthala, two each from Ludhiana and Rupnagar, one from Barnala, five from Pathankot and 11 from Fatehgarh Sahib. All deputy commissioners are also collecting information from their respective districts; it is being forwarded to the central government for further diplomatic action.

Four killed, 32 hurt after Tempo skids into Sirhind canal

Four people were killed and 32 injured when a light commercial vehicle, Tata-407, fell into the Sirhind canal near Jhamluti village, on the Rupnagar-Chamkaur Sahib road, 19 km from here, on Wednesday. Police sources said that the driver lost control over the vehicle, which rolled down into the muddy area of the canal at around 1 pm.
