The Doctors Federation of India (Docsfed), has asked the Medical Council of India (MCI) and union health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan to not consider the Punjab request for relaxing the MBBS eligibility criteria for the sake of filling seats in the NRI and other quotas.

Relaxation would further compromise the quality of medical education, said Docsfed. Federation president Dr DC Sharma issued a press release here on Sunday that even various court verdicts forbade the MCI from lowering the minimum qualifying score.

Docsfed demanded that all MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) seats under various quotas, including NRI, that were vacant after the second round of counselling by the Baba Farid University of Health

Sciences (BFUHS), be given to eligible candidates from the general category so that they missed no further of the ongoing academic session.

Dr Sharma said there was a provision already for this and no dearth of eligible candidates either, since many students had minimum qualifying score in the All-India Pre-Medical Entrance Test (AIPMET) but no seat; and for certain reserved categories, there was already a relaxation of 10% in the basic required marks.
