The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) on Wednesday took strong exception to SADs plan to re-induct Gulzar Singh Ranike in cabinet saying that the Congress would oppose the move in Assembly and in general public. He said that the government's decision to re-induct Ranike would lower the dignity of Punjab cabinet.

Terming the development as unfortunate, senior Congress leaders from Majha said that if this is true then it was a very gloomy day for democracy.

Ranike was given clean chit by the state Vigilance Bureau (VB). The Court never gave clean chit to Gulzar Singh Ranike, said a joint statement issued by DCC Gurdaspur president Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, DCC Amritsar president Harpartap Singh Ajnala, DCC Tarn Taran president Dharambir Agnihotri along with party MLAs Tripat Rajinder Bajwa, SS Sukhsarkaria, OP Soni, Aruna Chaudhry and other prominent leaders.

The entire probe conducted by the VB is a farce. VB only evaluated properties of Ranike's PA Sarabdyal Singh, to frame him, but never showed how much properties Ranike amassed in last 20 years, to save the SAD leader.

Sarabdyal Singh has been made a scapegoat to save Ranike, the leaders alleged.

From a meagre land chunk, Ranike now owns properties worth several crores- a school, a gas agency, a palatial house and other assets.

“Congress will now expose all wrongdoing of state government to the public”, said Sukhjinder Randhawa, announcing that congress would boycott Ranike in Assembly.

“Cabinet is the highest decision making body of the state and how can a person like Ranike re-inducted when embezzlemnet to tune of crores of Rupee were found in his discretionary grants. How, Ranike would take decision in cabinet pertaining to entire Punjab, when he grossly failed to oversee misuse of grants meant for his own constituency”, he questioned to CM.

He said that this would further lower the confidence of public in the state government, which as already lost public support following spate of law and order issues and crime against women.

He asked the Congress to gear up to give a strong fight to Shiromani Akali Dal for inducting a corrupt person in the cabinet.

Bison's watering hole

Once upon a time, the tricity's most sought after watering hole at the Chandigarh Golf Club bore a strong character and historical profile. Pictures of legendary players had adorned the walls. A massive Indian bison head mounted at a prime location of the bar's walls complemented the pictures and presided over the cheery spirit of the late evenings. The pictures depicted the sport's great icons playing varied shots from beautiful locales across the world. Vikram Jit Singh
