Easy money and a lavish lifestyle are leading an increasing number of youngster to a life of crime.

Crimes committed by juveniles in SAS Nagar have witnessed a steady increase in the last three years. In 2010, 12 juveniles were booked by police in different crimes while the next year the number went up to 31. In 2012, police arrested 44 juveniles. In 2013 till date, 16 juveniles have been booked by police in various cases.

Even though a large chunk of arrested juveniles are school dropouts, even those studying are getting hooked to crime for easy money.

Though majority of juveniles have been apprehended in cases of theft and snatching, a few have been booked in cases of sexual assault and murder as well. Most have a number of cases registered against them and are drug addicts.

"Poverty and wish to live lavish life is what compels these kids to commit crime without knowing its repercussions. Many have more than one case registered against them. Most kids live in colonies and face parental neglect owing to poverty. Most are school dropouts. So, there is a need to ensure counselling and education for these kids," said SAS Nagar SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar.

A police official, on the condition of anonymity, said, "Many times we have noticed that arrested juveniles initially take to petty thefts and when their crimes go undetected, it gives them a kick and takes away the fear of being caught. This gets them into the crime world."
