The two-time MLA from Tohana and incumbent state agriculture minister, Paramvir Singh (58), who nurtured the political legacy of his father Harpal Singh, also a former Haryana cabinet minister, has to battle it out with a newcomer, but resourceful business tycoon, and a senior BJP leader to make it a hat-trick of wins in the coming assembly elections.

Tohana assembly constituency that shares border with the neighbouring state of Punjab had remained a pocket borough of Singh’s family, as his father Harpal Singh was a legislator from here on five occasions since the state came into existence.

Babli had already caught public attention by making generous donations to welfare projects from his pocket, while Barala, who is state convener of the iron collection committee for ‘Statue of Unity’, a memorial of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and a dream project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is hoping to sail through on the saffron party’s crest.

On the other hand, sitting MLA Paramvir Singh’s disconnect with public and his inaccessibility to common man, makes the Congress vulnerable on this seat.

Of late, a foundation-stone laying ceremony by him late in the evening at Jakhal town, a part of Tohana segment, has come under criticism of the opposition parties.

INLD leader Nishan Singh had dubbed the cabinet minister’s stone-laying ceremony late in the evening an exercise to woo public with the polls approaching near.

The electorate has a perception that Singh lives an “aristocratic” lifestyle, which is also the reason behind his public disconnect but his honest image makes him stand him apart from rest of the candidates.

Surprisingly, Singh, who has been holding agriculture portfolio in the state government since 2004, had on very few occasions visited outside his constituency and people close to him claim that he rarely remain available for others except people of his constituency.

About the achievements of Paramvir Singh, a spokesperson of the public relations department said the agriculture minister got a railway overbridge (RoB) worth `19 crore constructed, a mini-secretariat building came into existence, a four-lane bridge on the Bhakra Canal is in the process of completion and roads in different directions to Tohana were also being constructed.
