In a significant development, the union power ministry’s standing committee on power system planning for the northern region has given its final approval for setting up of 220-kilovolt (KV) power sub-station to meet the increasing power demand of the city.
With this nod, work on the Rs. 150-crore project, land (around 3 acres) for which has been earmarked at Hallomajra, and is to be funded by the power ministry, is expected to begin soon.
The project received the final go-ahead on August 9, after the Power Grid Corporation of India submitted its survey report on the project.
‘Future planning in motion’
The current power infrastructure in the city is incapable of taking a load of more than 400 Megawatts (MWs). The maximum peak load of Chandigarh is about 400 MWs and it is projected to touch a maximum of 439 MWs by
The city has only one 300-KV substation at Kishangarh and the power load of city is fed from Kishangarh-based 3x100 MVA power transformers, SAS Nagar’s 2x80 MVA and 66-KV line from Dhulkote.
Acknowledging the shortcomings, UT superintending engineer MP Singh admitted that the present infrastructure was not capable of meeting the increasing demand of power.
“If the infrastructure is not upgraded in time, then we will be left with no option but to resort to power cuts,” said Singh.
He added that the new substation will address the power requirements of the city for next 20 years.
Demand put up last year
The electricity department had submitted the demand for the new substation in 2013 following a study conducted by the Power Grid Corporation of India in which it had observed that under normal and contingency conditions, some system elements were getting critically loaded. Therefore, there was a need to strengthen transmission system at various points in the city. The study had also highlighted that there was no inter-state transmission system (ISTS) inter-connection available to Chandigarh’s transmission system at present.
The new substation will get supply from the Power Grid Corporation of India’s 440 KV sub-station in Barwala, Panchkula. The total length of the route is 28km.
Limited land availability decided technology used
Due to limited land available in the city, it has been decided to set up new sub-station on gas-insulated sub-stations (GIS) technology, which will require only around 3 acres. For the conventional air-insulated sub-station (AIS), the land requirement would have been around nine acre.
