Five tricity shooters — Hema KC, Anjum Moudgil, Vishawajeet Singh, Gauri Sheoran and Yasheswani Deswal — have been selected in the Indian shooting squad for the ISSF World Championships to be held at Granada, Spain, from September 6 to 20.

The upcoming World Championships will be the first for these local shooters.

“It is the biggest competition of my life and I am looking forward to it. I will try to give my best,” said Anjum, while talking on phone from Delhi, where she is attending the national camp.

At the World Championship, the city girl will aim for the medal in the Rifle 3 Position and Rifle Prone events under the junior women’s category. Anjum sealed her berth in the two events along with Elizabeth Susan Koshy and Priyal Keni.

Anjum, who studies in BA (final year) at DAV College, Sector 10, also admitted that she was feeling anxious before the big event, but insisted that the training was pre-occupying her mind at the moment.

“I just procured a new rifle and have been spending most of my time practising with it. That has helped me in keeping the nerves in check,” shared the shooter, who has competed in as many as 10 international events so far, besides many national level championships.

At the World Championship, Hema, who is former student of DAV College, Sector 10 (Chandigarh), will take part in 300m Rifle 3 Position and 300m Sports Rifle Prone events under the senior women’s section.

Meanwhile, Panchkula-based shooter Yasheswani will lead the Indian challenge in the junior women’s Air Pistol event along with P Shri Nivetha and Malaika Goel. Gauri will compete at the Granada event in the junior women’s Sports Pistol event along with Shreya Gawande and P Shri Nivetha, while Vishawajeet is part of threemember junior men’s teams that will compete in Sports Pistol and Free Pistol events.

Amanendra Mann, who is an associate professor of Physical Education at DAV College-10, congratulated Hema,
Anjum and other local shooters on their selection to the national team.

“I am very happy with Hema and Anjum’s selection to the Indian team, and hope they win medals to make the country proud. For the last one year, we have been working with the two shooters on the psychological aspects of the sport, so that they remain mentally tough at big tournaments. I am hopeful our efforts will bear desirable results.”
