The Shiromani Akali Dal ( SAD) candidate from Anandpur Sahib, Prem Singh Chandumajra (64), on Monday put his foot in his mouth when he called his opponent, Congress candidate Ambika Soni, “72 saal di buddhi aurat” (72-yearold old woman) and referred to Congress leaders as animals — in the presence of Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal.

The CM was quick to condemn the outburst. “It was loose talk. It’s not acceptable,’ Badal said.

Chandumajra, who was addressing a political rally here, said, “Congress ne 72 saal di buddhi aurat (Soni) nu ticket de ditti hai jine ajj tak kadi election nahi ladia. Itho bhavein Sonia Gandhi vee aa jaye, oh haar ke jaugi,” (The Congress has given the ticket to an old woman who has never contested any elections. Even if Sonia Gandhi contests from here, she will lose.”

He went on to say, “Mainu pata hai ki Kurali to baad jungli janwar tuhadi fasal kharab kar dende ne, tussi Congress de janwaran nu sambalo, main jungli janwaran nu dekh launga (I know that beyond Kurali, animals are destroying your crops. You take care of Congress animals, I’ll take care of the wild animals).”

When asked about the language used by Chandumajra, Badal said, “In the elections, our opponents are our brothers and sisters. We should not take this battle of politics personally.”

Urging people to vote and support Chandumajra, Badal said, “If the NDA comes to power, Punjab would get more help for fast industrialisation and new projects would be granted by the Centre.”

Others who spoke on the occasion included minister Madan Mohan Mittal, Rupnagar MLA Dr Daljit Singh Cheema, ex-MLA Ujjagar Singh Badali, BJP district unit president Sukhwinder Goldy and zila parishad chairman Paramjit Kaur Badali.

When contacted, Congress MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu said, “It seems Chandumajra has lost his mental balance. He should have thought about his mother and sisters before lashing out at a woman. It’s unfortunate that he calls himself a professor but uses such language.”
