The Punjab government on Thursday announced a new scheme of distributing free saplings of poplar trees to farmers as part of its diversification drive in the state.

The forest department would distribute the saplings and provide expertise, while the land covered under the poplar plantation would be exempted from all forest laws and farmers would remain sole owners of the wood produced with the assistance of the forest department, forest minister Chunni Lal Bhagat said here.

"To ensure zero loss in cash crop production, the department would help farmers with technical advice for inter-cropping during the first three years," he added.
