In a major breakthrough in the ongoing probe in the Border Area Development Fund embezzlement scam in villages of Attari constituency, the vigilance bureau claim to have nabbed a block development panchayat officer (BDPO) and two ex-sarpanches.

The BDPO has been identified as Satwinder Singh and the ex-sarpanches as Dalip Singh and Amrik Singh.

One of these ex-sarpanches represented Ranike, village of former animal husbandry minister Gulzar Singh Ranike.

According to the vigilance bureau, the three were arrested in connection with the FIR No 175 registered in 2011 that related to embezzlement of funds under the Border Area Development Programme.

Confirming this, Vigilance Bureau SSP Opinder Singh Ghuman said, "BDPO Satwinder Singh has been arrested as he had issued utilisation certificates of the grants.  Till now the BDPO had issued utilisation certificates to development works of around Rs. 40 lakh. We will seek his police remand so that more details can be gathered."

Ghuman said, "The two ex-sarpanches have been nabbed as they furnished their original details to get an account opened in the bank to encash the money."

Ghuman claimed that the bank officials identified the two ex-sarpanches. Dalip Singh was the ex-sarpanch of Ranike village whereas Amrik Singh was ex-sarpanch of Neshta village.

The SSP said, "These all arrests are related to the FIR No 175 registered in May 2011. In this FIR, Sarbhdyal Singh, former PA to Ranike, was also named."
