Ten days before her marriage, a teenage girl was found hanging from a pine tree at Chhakreil on the outskirts of the state capital on Friday morning.

Jayanti Devi (18) was found hanging from a tree near her residence. A police official said the villagers informed the Dhalli police station at 10 am after which police rushed the spot.

The police added that in the preliminary inquiry it appears to be a suicide case, but they have not received any note or other evidence blaming anyone for the act. A villager, Anil Kumar, said the victim’s marriage was scheduled for July 7.

The police official said after the post mortem the body has been handed over to the family and a case under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal procedure was registered. Though it is a suicide case, the police are investigating the matter from other angles, said a senior police official.
