Girls’ hostel residents at Guru Nanak Dev University are panicked and feeling unsecured by the presence of an intruder, who according to them is a short, “naked” man and knocks at their doors in the dead of night.

At first she did not pay a heed, considering it as her illusion. But the door was knocked again; she went up to the window and saw a short, naked man gazing at her. The man told her: “Darwaza kholo (open the door).”

This incident was shared with Hindustan Times by a group of girls’ hostel residents.

“It’s a matter of identity of our hostel colleague, that’s why we are not making her name public.

However, it’s our moral duty to bring the matter into notice. This is not the first incident; we have heard similar cases by our seniors as well. If it happens to our friend today, it can happen to us tomorrow,” said the girls.

A women night attendant, Tarsem, said: “I was on duty when girls reported me about the incident and explained the intruder’s look. Within a minute, we rushed to her room, but the man had gone. I can assure that there is no leniency on my part.

“However, after the incident, more male guards should be deployed on patrolling and along the boundary wall.”

The university authorities want to hush-up the matter, even as the same incident happened in two hostels — hostel number 3 and working women’s hostel — on the same night, said the girls.

It happened around 11.15pm at hostel number 3 and within an hour a girl at working women’s hostel screamed as she saw a naked man and the description she gave was almost same, they said.

“When both girls are complaining about such incidents, how this can be a cooked tale. Even our seniors told us about such incidents last year. After the incident one of our seniors had eventually changed her hostel,” claimed the girls.

Warden Meenakshi Singhal said: “It has been brought to my notice. The incident is an eye opener and a shock as well for us. Being the warden, the safety of my girls is my priority. The overall security scenario needs to be overhauled for the safety of girls.”

When asked was that same man at the two hostels, she said: “Such incidents had never happened before in the working women’s hostel. It is hard to say as of now that whether the man was same of different. But the security measures will be tightened as the university authorities are taking the matter very seriously.”

Sharing the incident a group of 15-20 hostlers said: “The moment we reported the matter to security guards, they searched for the man, but he was vanished by then.”

However, we were disappointed when we reported the matter to the guards and one of the ladies sitting there told our friend, they said: “Tera veham hoga, tu paath kar ke soya kar (it’s your illusion, you take god’s name before going to bed).

Elaborating on the intruder’s look, they said: “Our friend told us that he was naked and freaked her with his actions, but luckily she had bolted the mesh door and windows. We are sure he isn’t our mess staff, he might be a labourer as he spoke in Hindi, who seemed to be under influence of drug.

Our friend has given the sketch of the man to the authorities, he should be caught soon.”
