“I joined the party about three weeks ago, but the announcement was made on Wednesday. I am just an ordinary member. I joined the party because it is different, sincere and honest,” Lt Gen Panag, 65, said on Friday.

He added he would advise the party on strategic affairs and national security. The AAP will make its national debut in the Lok Sabha polls due in less than 100 days.

On contesting elections, he said, “The party asked me to contest elections, but I told them I did not have any such inclination.”

He added, "I don't have any mass following, but will surely campaign for the party."

Lt Gen Panag was commissioned into the army in December 1968 and retired in December 2008. He had served as commander of Northern and Central Commands.

He retired recently from the Chandigarh bench of the Armed Forces Tribunal.
