Following the death of Manu Mukt Manav, 30, a trainee IPS officer from Hisar, on Thursday night by drowning in a swimming pool at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad, his father has alleged foul play and demanded a CBI probe in the matter.

Talking to Hindustan Times over phone, Ram Niwas Manav, 60, a retired professor, said his son, who was a teetotaller, knew swimming well, so the theory of his drowning in the pool was not credible.
He wondered why his son would enter the swimming pool so late and that too in a formal dress; even if he accidentally fell into the pool, why the other trainees accompanying him did not try to save him, he asked.

The Manav family, which hails from Tigra village of Mahendergarh district, said Manu who bagged the 180th rank in the UPSC exam in 2012-13 wanted to be an IPS officer since the age of four. Manu, who did his graduation from a Hisar college and the post-graduation from Panjab University, secured merit positions throughout his studies.

Ram Niwas said his father Pandit Matadin, who was a freedom fighter, wanted him (Ram Niwas) to join civil services, but he joined the education sector and wanted to realise the dream through Manu.

Ram Niwas’s daughter is a professor at BC University, Boston, US.

The family said Hyderabad police academy commandant RK Reddy called up the family at 1.45am on Friday and apprised them of the incident.

Hinting at foul play, a family member told HT that Manu, who had got the Himachal Pradesh cadre and had joined at Bilaspur a few months ago, had apprised the family that a colleague had submitted a complaint against him saying he was given the chance to lead in all tasks.

The family member said Manu probably was also selected to lead the passing-out parade scheduled for November to be attended by the Prime Minister or the home minister and it might have led to heartburn to those opposed to him.

The family said Manu’s mother and maternal uncle had gone to Hyderabad and the body would arrive at Hisar on Saturday. The cremation is likely to take place at 4 pm on Saturday.

The family said that after the cremation, they would urge the Prime Minister and the home minister to conduct a CBI probe into the matter to reach at the truth.
