The Punjab and Haryana high court on Thursday refused to entertain former Punjab DGP (prisons) Shashi Kant’s petition seeking anticipatory bail in any criminal case to be registered against him in the state, after he had disclosed names of politicians allegedly involved in the drug racket.
When the petition came up for hearing before the court headed by justice Tejinder Singh Dhindsa and the court refused to grant any relief, Kant chose to withdraw his petition.
The petitioner feared threat to his life and his likely connect in any “created case” by powerful politicians.
Kant had informed the court that in case the court did not deem it fit to grant him anticipatory bail, protection might be granted in the form of an advance 15 days notice in writing to him in case he was sought to be arrested in any criminal case.
Kant had on April 22 named Punjab’s political leaders who were allegedly involved in the drug racket.
In a press conference in Jalandhar, Kant had named cabinet ministers Gulzar Singh Ranike and Ajit Singh Kohar, Shiromani Akal Dal (SAD) MLAs Virsa Singh Valtoha (Khemkaran), and Harmeet Singh Sandhu (Tarn Taran ), senior SAD leader Veer Singh Lopoke, and Jimmy Kalia, a close aide of BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia.
Also, the former DGP had alleged that Congress’ Amritsar West MLA OP Soni was involved in promoting drug peddlers.
