The Punjab and Haryana high court on Thursday put a stay on the screening of Bollywood movie ‘Grand Masti’ till July 31. The movie starring Vivek Oberoi, Riteish Deshmukh and Aftab Shivdasani, a sequel to the 2004 hit ‘Masti’, was released on September 13 last year.

Justice Rajan Gupta, while hearing a petition filed by the manager of Faridabad-based City Mall, seeking quashing of an FIR registered against him for screening of the movie, ordered, “The display of movie ‘Grand Masti’ shall remain stayed till the next date of hearing.”

The court also issued a notice of motion to the Haryana government and other respondents, including the complainant, for submitting their replies by July 31.

Vikesh Sharma, manager of City Mall, had informed the court that four days after the movie’s release, an FIR was registered against him and his colleagues on September 17, 2013, by Asha Ram Verma under Section 7 of the Cinematograph Act, 1952, at Faridabad (central) police station.

The complainant had informed the police that it was an adult movie and their company, Precision Stampings, gave its tickets to all employees. The employees went to watch the movie with their kids and this had an adverse effect on their minds as it contained objectionable content.

However, the petitioner’s counsel informed the court on Thursday that no offence under Section 7 of the act had been made out as the movie was cleared by the censor board. The counsel also submitted that since a compromise had been reached out between the complainant and the petitioner, the FIR should be quashed.

Just before the movie’s release last year, a petition was filed in the high court, seeking a ban on the movie due to allegations of vulgar dialogues and obscene content, besides scenes that degraded women. Initially, the court had stayed its release, but just a day before the movie was to be released, it had given the go-ahead.
