In an attempt to beautify the historic Choggan Ground for the Independence Day celebrations on Friday, the municipal council (MC) installed high-mast lighting on Tuesday. According to MC executive officer, the MC had spent nearly Rs 5 lakh for installing the light, which might be made operational on Wednesday.
Chandigarh-based expert Rajkumar (who goes by his first name only), who installed the high-mast light, said authorities would be able to organise football tournaments under the light here.
Flood lights were installed in the ground nearly 5-6 years ago for organising football tournaments, but it did not succeed due to technical problems in the lights.
According to Rajkumar, the newly-installed, high-mast light was attached to the top of a pole, pointing towards the ground, so that it could light up a highway or a recreational field.
He informed that the light was mounted at least 15 meters high on the pole. Rajkumar added that a luminaire ring surrounded the pole and several independent lighting fixtures had been mounted around it.
The district administration has also taken steps to prevent unexpected showers from playing spoilsport on Friday. Additional deputy commissioner Manmohan Sharma said a water proof tent was being installed on the ground for conducting the programme on Friday. If needed, the remaining activities would be conducted at SFDA Hall here, he said.
