Both the rival factions of the ad hoc Haryana Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, led by Didar Singh Nalvi and Jagdish Singh Jhinda, have joined hands and announced to jointly organise a Sikh convention (Haryana Sikh Sammelan) in Kaithal on July 6.

Nalvi told HT that the convention would be attended by chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and finance minister HS Chattha who would be submitted a memorandum of the demands of the Sikh community of Haryana.

The main demand at the Sikh convention would be the formation of a separate Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee for Haryana, he said.

The Section 72 of the Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966, had the provision of for mation of a separate SGPC for Haryana though none of the government had let it be formed, Nalvi said.

He added that Hooda and Chattha in the convention would be apprised of the fact that though the Congress had made this announcement in its manifesto in both the previous assembly polls, the separate gurdwara body had not been formed.

“However, we will urge them to form separate gurdwara panel for the state in a month’s time else the Sikh community might get anguished and the Congress might face adverse response of the community in the assembly elections,” he said.

Carry secrets to the grave

Today when secrets are sold as easily as the books of Sanjay Baru and Natwar Singh, I recall the true story of a conscience keeper that I heard from my father. It is about Chakwal village in undivided Punjab, where lived a Sikh landlord with a large landholding, a palatial house, seven sons and their children. Writes Neela Sood.
